Activated carbon for biogas – effective purification and stable operation
Professional solutions for Danish biogas plants
How do you ensure stable and efficient biogas – and when is activated carbon the right solution?
At Dankalk, we help biogas plants throughout Denmark optimize operations through activated carbon, defoamers, scale inhibitors and chemical products against hydrogen sulfide .
We deliver solutions that reduce costs, protect the plant and increase gas yield. Our products are already used in both municipal and industrial biogas plants in Denmark.
Activated carbon – cleaner biogas
Why does activated carbon play such an important role in biogas production? Activated carbon is used to clean and polish the biogas, so that impurities such as hydrogen sulfide (H ₂ S), siloxanes and other organic compounds are removed before the gas is used in engines or sent out into the natural gas grid.
The porous structure of activated carbon provides a huge surface area that effectively adsorbs unwanted substances and ensures a stable, high-quality gas.
Advantages of using activated carbon in biogas plants:
- Effectively removes H ₂ S and other corrosive components
- Extends the life of engines and filters
- Improves gas quality and energy efficiency
- Reduces downtime and maintenance costs
- Ensures lower overall gas upgrade costs
At Dankalk, we supply both standard and special types of activated carbon, adapted to your system type, gas volume, humidity and desired operating intervals. We also advise on correct placement and replacement frequency for optimal effect.

Biogas and hydrogen sulfide – gain control over the process
How do you deal with hydrogen sulfide in your biogas before it damages equipment and engines? Hydrogen sulfide is one of the biggest problems in biogas production, as it increases both corrosion and operating costs. At Dankalk, we offer a number of solutions to reduce H ₂ The S level effectively:
- Activated carbon – for polishing biogas and removing residual H ₂ S
- Nutriox – for chemical oxidation of hydrogen sulfide in the liquid phase
- Iron products – e.g. ferric chloride and ferric sulfate , which bind sulfur directly in the reactor
Adding iron products has the dual effect of both reducing hydrogen sulfide and acting as a micronutrient for the bacteria that produce biogas. This results in a more stable biological process and higher gas yield.
Antifoams and scale inhibitors for biogas
How do you avoid foam and deposits in your biogas plant?
Foam and hard deposits – e.g. struvite – can inhibit production and require costly shutdowns.
Dankalk offers defoamers and scale inhibitors that effectively counteract foam and precipitation without disrupting the biological balance.
Our products help you to:
- Prevent foam build-up in reactors and tanks
- Dissolve existing deposits and prevent new ones
- Ensure a more stable gas flow
- Reduce the need for manual cleaning
Scale inhibitors work by encapsulating the particles that normally form hard deposits so that they do not stick to the surfaces of the system.
How do I choose the right type of activated carbon for biogas?
The optimal solution depends on the gas composition, humidity, sulfur content and operating mode. At Dankalk, we help you conduct both laboratory and full-scale tests to ensure you get the most suitable type of activated carbon for your plant.
We supply both carbon for primary removal and polishing, depending on whether you have low or high concentration H ₂ S.
